Les Bretons sont l'une des plus anciennes communautés françaises de New York. Fuyant la misère des campagnes, près de 100 000 d'entre eux se sont installés dans la ville qui ne dort jamais entre la fin du XIXème siècle et le début du XXème.

Certains sont restés et devenus de vrais Américains, d'autres sont rentrés au pays. Mais les liens ne se sont jamais rompus. Aujourd'hui, ils seraient encore plus de 5 000 à vivre dans la plus grande ville des États-Unis. Une communauté qui a sa culture, ses codes et ses fiefs.

De Gourin à New York, en passant par la Louisiane, ce documentaire retrace l'histoire des Bretons qui ont traversé l'Atlantique à la recherche du rêve américain. Il met en lumière des personnages contemporains qui perpétuent cette diaspora dynamique, créant des liens culturels et économiques entre la Bretagne et les États-Unis.

Breizh Amerika dans le documentaire

Pour Breizh Amerika, ce reportage a une résonance toute particulière. Les équipes de TF1 nous ont suivis en 2024, en Bretagne puis en Louisiane, pendant une nouvelle étape de notre aventure transatlantique.

En Bretagne, le tournage est notamment passé par la Brasserie Lancelot, où se préparait notre Breizh Amerika session IPA, une bière imaginée pour symboliser à sa manière la rencontre entre la Bretagne et les États-Unis.

Quelques semaines plus tard, l’histoire continuait de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique.
À Lafayette, Breizh Amerika participait au Gulf Brew Festival, l’un des grands rendez-vous de la bière artisanale en Louisiane. Pour l’occasion, notre Breizh Amerika IPA, était présentée au public américain. Une manière très concrète de faire voyager un produit breton, mais aussi toute l’histoire qui l’accompagne, jusqu’au cœur du pays cajun.

Le même soir, le Breizh Amerika Collective montait sur scène au Jim Deggy’s Brewpub à Lafayette pour un concert consacré à la rencontre entre musique bretonne et culture louisianaise.

La tournée s’est ensuite poursuivie à La Nouvelle-Orléans, où les musiciens bretons Julien Le Mentec, Gweltaz Rialland et Thibault Niobé ont participé à une résidence de création de deux jours au New Orleans Jazz Museum. Ils y ont travaillé avec les musiciens louisianais Chantz Powell et George Brown, mêlant instruments traditionnels bretons, improvisation et cuivres de la Nouvelle-Orléans. La résidence s’est conclue par un concert au musée.

À Lafayette, le projet comportait également une dimension de transmission, avec des rencontres autour de la musique bretonne et notamment une masterclass à l’Université de Louisiane à Lafayette, prolongeant les échanges entre artistes bretons, musiciens et étudiants louisianais.

C’est précisément ce que Breizh Amerika cherche à construire depuis sa création. Faire vivre la relation entre la Bretagne et les États-Unis non seulement à travers la mémoire et l’histoire, mais aussi à travers de nouvelles collaborations très concrètes.

Musique, bière, rencontres et création artistique. Plus d’un siècle après les grandes vagues d’émigration bretonne vers les États-Unis racontées dans le documentaire, l’Atlantique continue d’être traversé dans les deux sens.

Cette tournée a été rendue possible grâce au soutien précieux de la Région Bretagne, du Celtic Bayou Festival, de la Brasserie Lancelot, de la Tavarn ar Roue Morvan, de Sévénéant Musique et de Jim Deggy’s Brewpub.

Jumelage Scott et Ploemeur

Tout a commencé il y a dix ans avec le travail de Breizh Amerika pour rapprocher la Bretagne et la Louisiane.

Bien avant qu’il soit question d’un jumelage entre Scott et Plœmeur, l’association créait déjà des rencontres entre musiciens, associations, acteurs culturels et habitants des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. Au fil des années, des relations humaines se sont nouées, des projets ont vu le jour et les liens entre la Bretagne et la Louisiane sont devenus de plus en plus concrets.

Le 29 septembre 2026, cette histoire franchira une nouvelle étape avec la signature officielle du jumelage entre Scott, en Louisiane, et Plœmeur, en Bretagne.
Pour Breizh Amerika, cette signature représente bien plus qu’un accord entre deux municipalités. Elle est l’aboutissement de dix années de rencontres, d’échanges et d’amitiés qui ont progressivement créé les conditions permettant aux deux villes de se rencontrer.

Pour Bryan Theriot, vice-président de Breizh Amerika, né à Scott et engagé depuis les premières années dans le rapprochement entre la Louisiane et la Bretagne, ce moment a une signification toute particulière :

« Je suis né à Scott, alors voir aujourd’hui ma ville créer un lien officiel avec Plœmeur est quelque chose de très spécial. Cela fait dix ans que nous travaillons avec Breizh Amerika pour rapprocher la Louisiane et la Bretagne, en créant des rencontres, des échanges et surtout des amitiés. Voir tout ce travail aboutir aujourd’hui à un jumelage est une vraie fierté. » Bryan Theriot, vice-président de Breizh Amerika

Le jumelage entre Scott et Plœmeur n’est donc pas né par hasard. Sans le travail mené par Breizh Amerika pendant toutes ces années, les deux villes ne se seraient pas rencontrées et ce jumelage n’aurait pas vu le jour.

De Scott à Plœmeur : dix ans pour construire une relation

L’histoire commence en Louisiane. Au fil des années, les échanges initiés par Breizh Amerika vont traverser l’Atlantique, prendre racine à Plœmeur puis, finalement, permettre aux deux villes de se rencontrer.

2016 – Les premiers liens avec Scott. Dans le cadre de la tournée Breizh on the Road… Again, le Breizh Amerika Collective traverse les États-Unis avec un objectif clairement affiché : travailler avec les communautés locales afin de créer de nouveaux réseaux et des relations transatlantiques durables. Le 21 mai 2016, la tournée fait étape à Scott, à Gallery Acadie, avec un atelier consacré à la langue et à la musique bretonnes. Scott devient ainsi l’un des points d’ancrage du travail de Breizh Amerika en Louisiane.

2017 – La Fête de la Bretagne à Scott. Breizh Amerika revient l’année suivante. Le 20 mai 2017, Scott accueille une journée consacrée à la Bretagne dans le cadre de la Fête de la Bretagne. Ce retour permet d’approfondir les relations créées l’année précédente et d’ancrer davantage la culture bretonne dans les échanges avec la communauté cajun. Bryan Theriot fait partie de ceux qui, sur place, contribuent à faire grandir cette relation entre sa ville natale et la Bretagne.

2018 – Copains comme Cajuns raconte les liens entre la Bretagne et la Louisiane. Les rencontres développées en Louisiane donnent naissance à un nouveau projet. Breizh Amerika propose au réalisateur quimpérois Yann Rivallain d’accompagner une délégation en Louisiane afin de documenter les liens entre les deux territoires. Le résultat est Copains comme Cajuns, un documentaire de 52 minutes en breton, français et anglais qui explore les liens culturels, linguistiques et musicaux entre la Bretagne et la Louisiane.

2020 – La Louisiane arrive à Plœmeur. Copains comme Cajuns est projeté à Plœmeur. Le public ploemeurois peut découvrir les liens historiques entre la Bretagne et la Louisiane, mais aussi les initiatives contemporaines destinées à rapprocher les deux territoires. Trois ans avant la première rencontre officielle entre Scott et Plœmeur, Breizh Amerika fait donc déjà vivre la relation Bretagne-Louisiane dans la commune.

Mai 2023 – De New Orleans à Kerroc’h. Breizh Amerika et le Ker Rock Café organisent à Kerroc’h, à Plœmeur, la soirée « De New Orleans à Kerroc’h ». Thomas Moisson et Roland Conq y partagent avec le public ce qu’ils ont vécu en Louisiane et leurs collaborations avec des musiciens cajuns. L’objectif dépasse déjà le simple concert : Breizh Amerika parle de collaborations permettant de créer des partenariats culturels durables entre la Bretagne et la Louisiane.

Août 2023 – Breizh Amerika provoque la rencontre entre Scott et Plœmeur. C’est l’étape décisive. Des représentants du comité de jumelage de Scott sont en Bretagne à la recherche d’une ville avec laquelle développer une relation durable. Breizh Amerika les met en relation avec Plœmeur. Le maire de Plœmeur, Ronan Loas, le confirme lui-même publiquement : « Sur l’initiative de Charles Kergaravat de Breizh Amerika », une rencontre est organisée en mairie avec des représentants de Scott, notamment Wanda Romero Gerard, du comité de jumelage, et Bryan Theriot, vice-président de Breizh Amerika. Pour la première fois, les deux villes se retrouvent autour de la même table et envisagent de futurs liens.

Octobre 2023 – Breizh Amerika poursuit le travail à Scott. Quelques mois après la rencontre à Plœmeur, Breizh Amerika retourne en Louisiane et rencontre le maire Jan-Scott Richard et le comité de jumelage de Scott. Une projection de Copains comme Cajuns est également organisée pour prolonger les échanges et travailler sur de futurs liens avec la Bretagne. La relation initiée à Plœmeur est désormais entretenue directement des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.

Mars 2024 – La musique bretonne revient en Louisiane… et à Scott. Breizh Amerika invite Pierre-Jacques Autret et Tanguy Soubigou en Louisiane pour représenter pour la première fois la Bretagne au Celtic Bayou Festival. Le duo se produit sur scène, participe à des échanges autour de la musique bretonne et à une masterclass à l’Université de Louisiane à Lafayette. Dans le cadre de ce séjour, les deux musiciens font également étape à Scott et jouent à la mairie pour Jan-Scott Richard, donnant une nouvelle dimension culturelle aux relations déjà engagées avec la ville. La Bretagne n’est plus seulement discutée autour d’une table : elle est directement partagée à travers sa musique. La participation d’Autret et Soubigou au Celtic Bayou Festival est documentée par Breizh Amerika.

Novembre 2024 – Zachary Richard à Plœmeur. La relation continue de vivre dans l’autre sens. Le 7 novembre 2024, Zachary Richard, auteur-compositeur louisianais et grande figure de la défense de la culture cadienne et de la langue française, est accueilli à la Salle Océanis pour une conférence consacrée à L’Histoire des Acadiennes et Acadiens de la Louisiane. L’événement est organisé en partenariat avec Breizh Amerika afin de renforcer les liens culturels entre la Bretagne et les communautés francophones de Louisiane.

2025 – Le Roi de l’Andouille au pays du Boudin. Breizh Amerika continue de créer des échanges très concrets entre les deux territoires. Benoît Rivalan, de la Maison de l’Andouille à Guémené-sur-Scorff, se rend en Louisiane pour rencontrer des professionnels locaux et partager son savoir-faire. Mis en relation avec Bryan Theriot, il est accueilli par sa famille et visite notamment Best Stop Market à Scott, l’une des références locales du boudin cajun. Benoît Rivalan explique vouloir créer « un lien nouveau entre la Bretagne et le Pays Cajun ». Un échange gastronomique qui illustre parfaitement la façon dont Breizh Amerika transforme les relations transatlantiques en rencontres humaines très concrètes.

Août 2026 – Breizh Amerika Summer Party à Plœmeur. À quelques semaines seulement de la signature du jumelage, Breizh Amerika organise le 21 août 2026 sa Summer Party au KerRock Café à Plœmeur. À l’affiche : le Duo Autret–Soubigou, déjà impliqué dans les projets louisianais de Breizh Amerika, et la Breizh Amerika Session IPA, créée avec la Brasserie Lancelot. Deux ans après leur passage à Scott et au Celtic Bayou Festival, Pierre-Jacques Autret et Tanguy Soubigou font cette fois vivre cet échange transatlantique à Plœmeur. L’événement rappelle que la relation Bretagne-Louisiane reste avant tout une histoire de rencontres, de musique et de culture partagée.

Septembre 2026 – Le jumelage devient officiel. Dix ans après les premières actions de Breizh Amerika à Scott, six ans après la projection de Copains comme Cajuns à Plœmeur et trois ans après la première rencontre entre les représentants des deux villes, la relation devient officiellement un jumelage.

Scott, au cœur de l’Acadiana

Située aux portes de Lafayette, Scott est profondément ancrée dans l’identité cajun de la Louisiane.

La ville s’est développée à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle avec l’arrivée du chemin de fer. Mais aujourd’hui, Scott est surtout connue pour l’une des grandes spécialités de la gastronomie cajun : le boudin.

En 2012, la ville a adopté le titre de “Boudin Capital of the World”, avant de lancer l’année suivante le Scott Boudin Festival, devenu un rendez-vous consacré à la gastronomie, à la musique et à la culture locale.

Scott est surtout une communauté particulièrement attachée à son patrimoine cajun, à sa musique et à ses traditions. Cette fierté locale et cette volonté de faire vivre sa culture expliquent aussi pourquoi les échanges avec la Bretagne ont trouvé un terrain aussi naturel dans la ville.

Plœmeur, une ville bretonne tournée vers la mer et le monde

De l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, Plœmeur – Plañvour en breton – compte environ 20 000 habitants et est l’une des principales communes du Morbihan.

Son identité est profondément maritime. Son territoire s’étend le long du littoral entre plages, criques, ports et quartiers aux identités fortes comme Kerroc’h, Lomener ou Fort-Bloqué.

La culture bretonne et le patrimoine local y occupent également une place importante.
Plœmeur possède par ailleurs une longue tradition d’ouverture internationale et entretient déjà plusieurs relations de jumelage et de coopération à l’étranger.

Comme Scott, Plœmeur est donc une communauté profondément attachée à son territoire et à sa culture, mais avec la volonté de partager cette identité et de construire des relations au-delà de ses frontières.

Deux villes, deux identités fortes, une même envie d’échanger

Scott et Plœmeur sont séparées par des milliers de kilomètres et possèdent chacune leur propre histoire.

Pourtant, au fil des rencontres, de nombreux points communs sont apparus : un fort sentiment d’appartenance locale, des cultures vivantes, une place importante accordée à la musique, à la gastronomie et à la convivialité, ainsi qu’une même volonté de transmettre leur patrimoine plutôt que de simplement le conserver.

Ce sont ces ressemblances humaines et culturelles que Breizh Amerika a progressivement mises en lumière.
Et c’est sur cette base que la relation entre les deux villes a pu se construire.

Grâce au jumelage, ce sont désormais les habitants, les écoles, les associations, les artistes, les acteurs touristiques et économiques de Scott et de Plœmeur qui pourront imaginer les prochains échanges et écrire la suite de cette histoire.

Il y a dix ans, Breizh Amerika commençait à bâtir un pont entre la Louisiane et la Bretagne.
Le 29 septembre, une nouvelle pierre vient s’ajouter à ce pont.

Twinning Scott and Ploemeur

It all started more than ten years ago with Breizh Amerika's work to bring Brittany and Louisiana closer together.
Long before anyone was talking about a twinning agreement, the organization was already creating connections between musicians, cultural organizations, community leaders and people on both sides of the Atlantic. Personal relationships gradually developed, first in Louisiana and later in Plœmeur.

On September 29, 2026, that story will reach a new milestone with the official signing of the twinning agreement between Scott, Louisiana and Plœmeur, Brittany.

For Breizh Amerika, the signing represents much more than an agreement between two municipalities. It is the result of ten years of meetings, projects and friendships that gradually created the conditions for these two communities to find one another.

For Bryan Theriot, Vice President of Breizh Amerika, who was born in Scott and has worked for years to strengthen connections between Louisiana and Brittany, the occasion has a particular significance:

“I was born in Scott, so seeing my hometown create an official connection with Plœmeur is something very special. For ten years, we have worked through Breizh Amerika to bring Louisiana and Brittany closer together by creating meetings, exchanges and, above all, friendships. Seeing all that work result in a twinning today is something we can be very proud of.”

The Scott–Plœmeur twinning did not happen by chance. Without the work carried out by Breizh Amerika over all these years, these two communities would not have met and this twinning would not have happened.

From Scott to Plœmeur: ten years of building a relationship

The story begins in Louisiana. Over the years, the connections created by Breizh Amerika crossed the Atlantic, took root in Plœmeur and eventually brought the two communities together.

2016 – Breizh Amerika's first connections in Scott. As part of the Breizh on the Road… Again tour, the Breizh Amerika Collective crossed the United States with an explicit goal of working with local communities to foster new networks and lasting transatlantic relationships. On May 21, the tour stopped in Scott, where Gallery Acadie hosted a Breton language and music workshop. Scott thus became one of the focal points of Breizh Amerika's work in Louisiana.

2017 – Fête de la Bretagne in Scott. Breizh Amerika returned the following year. On May 20, 2017, Scott hosted a full day dedicated to Brittany as part of the Fête de la Bretagne. This second year helped deepen relationships with the local community. Bryan Theriot was among those in Scott who would continue working over the years to develop connections between his hometown and Brittany.

2018 – Copains comme Cajuns tells the Brittany–Louisiana story. The relationships developed through Breizh Amerika's work in Louisiana led to another project: Copains comme Cajuns. The 52-minute documentary, produced in Breton, French and English, explores the cultural, linguistic and musical connections between Brittany and Louisiana and the people keeping those connections alive today.

2020 – Louisiana comes to Plœmeur. Copains comme Cajuns was screened in Plœmeur, introducing local audiences to both the historic connections between Brittany and Louisiana and the contemporary efforts to bring the two regions closer together. Three years before the first official meeting between Scott and Plœmeur, Breizh Amerika was therefore already bringing the Louisiana story directly into the Plœmeur community.

May 2023 – From New Orleans to Kerroc’h. Breizh Amerika and the Ker Rock Café organized “De New Orleans à Kerroc’h” in Plœmeur. Breton musicians Thomas Moisson and Roland Conq shared their experiences in Louisiana and their collaborations with Cajun musicians. Breizh Amerika explicitly described these collaborations as a way of creating lasting cultural partnerships between Louisiana and Brittany.

August 2023 – Breizh Amerika brings Scott and Plœmeur together. This was the decisive moment. Representatives of Scott's twinning committee were in Brittany looking to develop a lasting relationship with a Breton community. Breizh Amerika facilitated their meeting with Plœmeur. Plœmeur Mayor Ronan Loas later publicly described the meeting at City Hall as taking place “on the initiative of Charles Kergaravat of Breizh Amerika.” Scott twinning committee representative Wanda Romero Gerard and Breizh Amerika Vice President Bryan Theriot were among those taking part.

October 2023 – The work continues in Scott. Just a few months after the Plœmeur meeting, Breizh Amerika returned to Scott and met with Mayor Jan-Scott Richard and the city's twinning committee to continue developing the relationship with Brittany. Copains comme Cajuns was also screened for Scott officials. The relationship begun in Brittany was now being actively nurtured on both sides of the Atlantic.

March 2024 – Breton musicians welcomed at Scott City Hall. During another Breizh Amerika project in Louisiana, Pierre-Jacques Autret and Tanguy Soubigou performed in Scott, including a performance at City Hall for Mayor Jan-Scott Richard. The visit gave a very concrete cultural dimension to the relationship begun the previous year between Scott and Plœmeur: beyond institutional discussions, Breizh Amerika was bringing Breton culture directly into the Scott community and to its elected officials. The duo also took part in the Celtic Bayou Festival and a Breton music masterclass at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

November 2024 – Zachary Richard in Plœmeur. The cultural relationship continued to grow. On November 7, 2024, Louisiana singer-songwriter and prominent advocate for Cajun culture and the French language Zachary Richard came to Salle Océanis in Plœmeur for a conference on the history of Louisiana's Acadians. The event was organized in partnership with Breizh Amerika with the stated aim of reinforcing cultural ties between Brittany and Louisiana's Francophone communities.

2025 – From Guémené Andouille to Scott Boudin. Breizh Amerika continued creating very tangible exchanges between Brittany and Louisiana. Benoît Rivalan of the Maison de l’Andouille in Guémené-sur-Scorff travelled to Louisiana to meet local food producers and share his expertise. Connected with Bryan Theriot, Breizh Amerika Vice President and Scott native, he stayed with Bryan's family and visited Best Stop Market in Scott, one of the city's best-known Cajun boudin producers. Beyond food, the trip was another example of Breizh Amerika turning the Brittany–Louisiana relationship into direct exchanges between people, traditions and communities.

August 2026 – Breizh Amerika Summer Party in Plœmeur. Just weeks before the twinning ceremony, Breizh Amerika held its Summer Party at the KerRock Café in Plœmeur on August 21. The evening featured Duo Autret–Soubigou, musicians already involved in Breizh Amerika projects in Louisiana, alongside the Breizh Amerika Session IPA created with Brasserie Lancelot. The duo had represented Brittany at Louisiana's Celtic Bayou Festival in 2024, performed at the mayor's office of Scott, and taken part in a Breton music masterclass at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The event showed that, ten years after Breizh Amerika's first Louisiana initiatives, the association was still actively bringing the Brittany–Louisiana relationship to life in Plœmeur.

Sept 2026 – The twinning becomes official. Ten years after Breizh Amerika's first activities in Scott, six years after Copains comme Cajuns was screened in Plœmeur and three years after the first meeting between representatives of the two communities, Scott and Plœmeur make their relationship official.

Scott, in the heart of Acadiana

Its development was closely tied to the railroad and its location along the routes crossing southern Louisiana. Today, however, Scott is perhaps best known for one of Cajun cuisine's most iconic foods: boudin.

In 2012, Scott was officially designated the “Boudin Capital of the World.” The following year, the city held its first Scott Boudin Festival, which continues to celebrate local food, music and culture.

That strong sense of local identity, attachment to culture, french language, and desire to pass it on are also part of what allowed the connection with Brittany to take root so naturally in Scott.

Plœmeur, a Breton town between land and sea

Across the Atlantic, Plœmeur — Plañvour in Breton — has around 19,000 residents and is the fourth-largest municipality in the Morbihan department.

Its identity is deeply connected to the sea. The municipality stretches for approximately 11 miles, or 18 kilometers, along the Atlantic, with beaches, coves, small harbors and coastal communities such as Kerroc’h, Lomener and Fort-Bloqué. Sailing, surfing, diving and fishing are all part of local life.

Plœmeur also has a long tradition of international exchange. The municipality already maintains twinning relationships with several communities abroad, including Diksmuide in Belgium, Fermoy in Ireland and Ehmej in Lebanon.

Like Scott, Plœmeur is a community deeply attached to its territory and identity while also wanting to share that culture and build relationships beyond its borders.

Two communities, two strong identities, the same desire to connect

Scott and Plœmeur are separated by thousands of miles and each has its own distinct history.

Yet through years of exchanges, common ground quickly emerged: a strong sense of local identity, living cultures, an important place for music and community, and a shared desire not simply to preserve heritage but to pass it on and share it with others.
It was on this human and cultural foundation that Breizh Amerika was able to build the relationship between the two communities.

Through the twinning, residents, schools, associations, artists, tourism organizations and businesses in Scott and Plœmeur can now develop new exchanges and write the next part of this story.
Ten years ago, Breizh Amerika began building a bridge between Louisiana and Brittany.
On September 29, one more brick is added to that bridge.

L’été continue avec Breizh Amerika !

Le vendredi 21 août à partir de 19h, rendez-vous au KerRock Café pour une soirée placée sous le signe de la musique bretonne, des rencontres et des liens entre la Bretagne et les USA.

Au programme : Duo Autret – Soubigou, deux musiciens bien connus de l’aventure Breizh Amerika, et la Breizh Amerika Session IPA, créée en partenariat avec la Brasserie Lancelot.

Une bière qui ne se contente pas de raconter la rencontre entre deux rives de l’Atlantique : une partie des recettes de ses ventes contribue directement au financement de projets culturels bretons portés par l’association.

La musique bretonne avec Duo Autret – Soubigou

Pour cette Summer Party, Breizh Amerika retrouve Pierre-Jacques Autret et Tanguy Soubigou, qui forment le Duo Autret – Soubigou.

À la flûte et à l’accordéon, le duo propose une musique énergique, nourrie par les musiques de Bretagne, le fest-noz, mais aussi par des influences folk et traditionnelles venues d’ailleurs.

Mais leur présence le 21 août a une signification particulière pour Breizh Amerika : Pierre-Jacques et Tanguy ont déjà participé aux projets de l’association en Louisiane.
En 2024, Breizh Amerika les avait notamment invités à Lafayette pour représenter la Bretagne lors de la première présence bretonne au Celtic Bayou Festival. Leur venue faisait partie d’un projet plus large mêlant musique, gastronomie et découverte de la culture bretonne au cœur du pays cajun.

Leur passage en Louisiane ne s’était d’ailleurs pas limité à la scène : le duo avait également participé à une masterclass de musique bretonne à l’Université de Louisiane à Lafayette, prolongeant cet échange entre musiciens, étudiants et traditions musicales des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.

C’est exactement l’esprit que Breizh Amerika souhaite retrouver au Ker Rock Café : une culture bretonne vivante, festive et ouverte sur le monde.

Une bière née entre Bretagne et États-Unis

La soirée sera également l’occasion de découvrir ou redécouvrir la Breizh Amerika Session IPA, développée avec la Brasserie Lancelot.

Pour les 10 ans de l’association, les deux partenaires ont imaginé en 2025 une nouvelle bière capable de traduire dans le verre l’identité même de Breizh Amerika : une rencontre entre la Bretagne et l’Amérique.

Le résultat est une Session IPA blonde à 4 %, légère et rafraîchissante. Elle associe houblons américains et malt breton, avec une amertume présente mais accessible et des notes de fruits frais, particulièrement d’agrumes.

Le choix n'est pas simplement esthétique. Les ingrédients racontent eux aussi l’histoire du projet : un savoir-faire brassicole enraciné en Bretagne auquel viennent se mêler des influences américaines.

Boire une bière et soutenir des projets culturels bretons

Depuis sa création, la bière Breizh Amerika porte également une dimension associative.
Une partie des recettes issues des ventes est reversée aux projets culturels de Breizh Amerika, afin d’aider l’association à faire connaître la culture bretonne aux États-Unis et à créer de nouvelles collaborations entre artistes bretons et américains.

Avec la Session IPA, chaque bière vendue contribue notamment au financement de projets musicaux portés par l’association, dont le Breizh Amerika Collective et d'autres échanges permettant à des artistes bretons de rencontrer de nouveaux publics de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique.

A Short History of the Breton Language

Less than a century ago, Breton was the most widely spoken of all the Celtic languages, with more than one million speakers across western Brittany. Today, despite decades of decline and its classification as a severely endangered language by UNESCO, Breton is experiencing a remarkable revival thanks to schools, cultural initiatives and a passionate community of speakers and learners.

In his new book, A Short History of the Breton Language, Irish author and Celtic language enthusiast Diarmuid Ó Breasláin traces the extraordinary journey of Breton—from its origins in post-Roman Britain to its modern-day renewal. Written in English, the book opens the story of Brittany's language to a wider international audience, including the Breton diaspora and anyone interested in Celtic history and culture.

We spoke with Diarmuid about what inspired him to write the book, the lessons Breton shares with other Celtic languages, and why, despite the challenges, he believes the future of Breton is filled with hope.

1. What inspired you to write A Short History of the Breton Language?

I wrote the book to bring a wider audience to the story of the Breton language and it's resilience. It is in English to fill a gap in English speakers knowledge.

2. Your book covers more than 1,500 years of history. What was the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge was for the early period, gathering sources, but it's such an intricate story that other aspects weave it together - from riches, to rags, to rebirth and the stories in between. To be honest I learned a lot.

3. As an Irish author, what first drew you to the Breton language?

I developed an interest in the Celtic languages in my teens while learning Irish at school in Belfast, a city in political convulsion at the time.

I realised that like many other minority languages there was a common theme of disenpowerment and subsequent struggle leading to rebirth that I wanted to contribute to.

4. How closely related is Breton to the other Celtic languages?

I am not an academic linguist. Breton and Cornish are very close and lesser so is Irish, Scots Gaelic and Manx. The structure, use of prepositions single Celtic languages out.

I find it interesting, for example, that where as Welsh and Cornish both use 'da' meaning 'good' in English, Breton uses 'mat' and the Irish is ' maith'. How did that happen?

5. Which languages have had the greatest influence on Breton?

Initially, of course, it was the Brythonic languages which became Welsh and Cornish, but as Brittany moved eastward it became influenced by French. Manor and De Restrenen removed a lot of French from the written vocabulary between 1659 and 1730 but, like other Celtic languages in relation to English, the influence of the state language is pervasive.

Breton, however, is still intrinsically a Celtic language and it's relation to Cornish is very evident.

6. What caused the dramatic decline of Breton during the twentieth century?

There were over 1 million monoglot Breton speakers in 1914. The reasons for the decline are varied but interestingly common to many 'minority' languages. Education in the state language - in Brittany there was Le Symbols, a symbol for children who spoke Breton at school, in Ireland we had An Báta Scóir - the same thing.

The opening up of the countryside to outside influences, which is not a bad thing, but when your language is scorned and mocked, creates a sense of inferiority.

Both WWI and WWII had an influence also, and state hostility , endemic from the revolutionary period and the British state has a similar hostility vis a vis Irish, Welsh and Scots Gaelic.

7. Today Breton is experiencing a revival. What gives you the greatest hope?

Undoubtedly the schools, wether Diwan, Div Yezh or Dihun. The same thing is happening in Ireland. But this development can only happen when there is community initiative. In Ireland working class communities have taken great pride supporting bilingualism for their children and a sense of empowerment.

Added to that is support from regional/national government when they recognise the importance of culture and language in society. The Isle of Man is a good example of this. The Regional Council of Brittany (CRB) is now invested with Otis Publik ar Brezhoneg and Cornwall Council has a dedicated team for the Cornish language. None of this was happening when I started my journey with the Celtic languages in the 1980's.

8. Did anything surprise you while researching the book?

Thankfully I have studied French history, so in looking at the Revolutionary period and the Third Republic I knew the facts, but the concept of centralisation and monolingualism doesn't come across in standard history books.

The legacy maintains still in Paris, but less so I was also surprised by the resilience of the language from St Briuec to St Nazaire over 350 years and I related completely to the essence of community based revival as I have been part of it here in Belfast.

9. What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

I hope readers will take away a sense of hope and optimism. When I engaged with the Irish, and subsequent Celtic world in the 1980's, still a teenager, things were bleak, but today the vibrancy, positivity and community spirit is uplifting. We have achieved a great deal.

Breizh Amerika Profiles: William McMillan

William McMillan first became interested in Brittany as a middle-school student watching Stade Rennais matches to improve his French. That initial curiosity eventually led him to Université Rennes 2, where he conducted research on Breton-language education and decided to learn Breton himself.

Now living in Brest, William uses the language every day and studies how education, politics and social situations influence the ways younger people speak regional and minoritized languages.

In our latest Breizh Amerika Profile, William discusses the challenges of learning Breton, the resources that helped him and the unexpected similarities he has discovered between Minnesota and Brittany.

Where are you from, and what brought you to Brittany? Why did you decide to learn Breton?

I’m from Minnesota in the United States. I grew up near Minneapolis, but I also spent time in northern Minnesota, where my family is from, on the shores of Lake Superior.

Brittany has fascinated and inspired me for many years. I first discovered the region when I was still in middle school, watching Stade Rennais matches to improve my French. As I learned more about Brittany’s culture, people and languages, my interest continued to grow, especially in the Breton language.

Eventually, I began researching regional and minoritized languages and was given the opportunity to complete my master’s degree at Université Rennes 2, focusing on Breton-language education. Learning Breton became a natural step—not only to support my research, but also to better understand and respect the people and culture of Brittany.

Can you tell us about the research you've done on endangered languages?

Much of my research focuses on how education systems for endangered and regional languages are designed, and how they are shaped by political structures. I have studied several regional languages in France, including Breton, Corsican and Catalan, to better understand how history, culture and politics influence the way these languages are taught. I’m particularly interested in how different regions can learn from one another.

For my master’s research, I adapted a project I had previously conducted in Morocco and applied it to Brittany. I explored how middle and high school students use Breton in different social situations—for example, when speaking with friends compared to speaking with teachers—and how the topic of conversation influences their choice of language.

I also looked at how students perceived their use of Breton outside school, particularly in situations where they wanted to speak the language but felt unable to do so.

What challenges have you encountered while learning Breton? What resources have helped you the most?

Aside from mastering the mutations—where the first letter of a word changes depending on grammar—I would say the biggest challenge was simply finding opportunities to speak Breton before moving to Brest.

When I lived in Rennes, it was much harder to find Breton speakers and practice the language regularly. That’s actually one of the reasons I created my Instagram account: it gave me a way to use Breton every day.
Since moving to Brest, I’ve been able to speak Breton daily, which has made a huge difference.

For anyone interested in learning Breton, I highly recommend Desketa (desketa.bzh). It’s the Brittany Region’s free online learning platform and an excellent way to build a solid foundation before using the language in everyday life or taking classes. Organizations such as Sked, Mervent and Skol an Emsav also play an essential role in teaching Breton and supporting learners.

What has surprised you most about living in Brittany?

One of the things that has touched me most is how many similarities there are between Minnesota and Brittany.
Of course, both regions have beautiful coastlines, dramatic weather and spectacular natural landscapes. But the deeper similarities are found in the people.

Minnesotans and Bretons both have a strong desire to explore the world—you can find people from either place in the most unexpected corners of the globe. Yet wherever they go, they often develop an even stronger appreciation for their own identity and eventually feel drawn back home.

The love that both Minnesotans and Bretons have for their region, language and culture is something quite special. They are two peoples who are curious about the world, but who remain deeply connected to the place that shaped them.

LAFAYETTE, La. — May 9th — Lafayette’s music, food, tourism and unique culture will take center stage this summer in Brittany, France, with a new Lafayette tourism tent planned for the upcoming Festival Interceltique de Lorient, one of France’s largest urban festivals, attracting an estimated 800,000 to 1 million visitors each year.

The Lafayette presence, facilitated by Breizh Amerika, will be announced locally during Fête de la Bretagne Louisiane on Saturday, May 9, at Wild Child Wines in Lafayette. The event will celebrate the next chapter of the Louisiana–Brittany relationship with Breton gastronomy tastings, global wine culture and live music from Louis Michot, who is also scheduled to perform at Festival Interceltique de Lorient this summer.

“Festival Interceltique de Lorient offers Lafayette an extraordinary opportunity to share our food, music, French language heritage and cultural identity with hundreds of thousands of international visitors,” said Ben Berthelot, President of Lafayette Travel. “We are grateful to Breizh Amerika for helping create this bridge between Lafayette and Brittany.”

The announcement comes as Louisiana musician Louis Michot prepares to perform at the 2026 Festival Interceltique de Lorient with Louis Michot & SWAMP MAGIC. Michot, a two-time Grammy Award winner and a leading voice in Louisiana French music, is scheduled for festival appearances from August 3–6, 2026, following his October 2025 collaboration in Lafayette with Breton musicians brought by Breizh Amerika.

That October collaboration, held during Festival Acadiens et Créoles programming, brought Breton artists Tanguy Soubigou and Simon Créachcadec together with Louisiana musicians including Louis Michot, Jourdan Thibodeaux, Trey Boudreaux and Kevin Naquin. The collaboration continued a musical dialogue between Brittany and Louisiana rooted in shared traditions, regional languages and living cultural memory.

The May 9 Fête de la Bretagne Louisiane event at Wild Child Wines will celebrate this next chapter with a Breton gastronomy theme. Guests will be invited to taste and discover products from Brittany and Louisiana, including Bordier butter, Payson butter, Bret’s chips, Groix & Nature specialties and Kouign Marie products. The event will also feature music from Louis Michot, connecting Lafayette audiences directly to the artist who will carry Louisiana’s sound to Brittany this summer.

Wild Child Wines, known for its international wine selection and globally inspired food culture, offers a natural setting for the event’s focus on gastronomy, travel and transatlantic cultural exchange.

A Decade of Brittany–Louisiana Exchange
Over the past decade, Breizh Amerika’s work in Lafayette and Louisiana has generated a clear cultural return on investment, including +20 documented Brittany–Louisiana initiatives and +50 musician and artist exchange participations.

L’île de Man accueille pour la première fois l’Interceltic Business Forum

L’Interceltic Business Forum s’apprête à écrire une nouvelle page de son histoire sur l’île de Man, à l’occasion de sa neuvième édition et, surtout, pour la première fois dans ce territoire celtique.

Depuis sa création, le forum s’est imposé comme un rendez-vous à part, au croisement de l’entreprise, de l’innovation, des territoires et des cultures celtes. Plus qu’un simple événement économique, il défend une vision : celle d’un espace interceltique capable de faire dialoguer identité, coopération et ambition internationale.

L’édition 2026 a donc une portée particulière. En choisissant l’île de Man, le forum affirme sa volonté de continuer à élargir sa géographie tout en restant fidèle à son ADN. Cette première mannoise met en lumière un territoire qui conjugue héritage celtique, agilité institutionnelle et volonté de se positionner sur les secteurs d’avenir. Pour les participants venus de Bretagne, de Cornouailles, d’Irlande, d’Écosse, du pays de Galles et d’ailleurs, ce rendez-vous promet une journée de réflexion, de rencontres et de perspectives concrètes.

Des intervenants majeurs : les leaders de l’île de Man et des Cornouailles, et l’essor de l’IA

La force de cette neuvième édition tient d’abord à la qualité de son plateau. Dès l’ouverture, le ton sera donné avec la présence de Hon. Alf Cannan MHK, Chief Minister de l’île de Man, de Kirree Gooberman, CEO de Business Isle of Man, et de Charles Kergaravat, fondateur de l’Interceltic Business Forum. Cette séquence d’ouverture souligne l’importance politique et stratégique de l’événement pour le territoire hôte, qui entend clairement faire de cette première édition sur l’île de Man un moment fort de son calendrier économique.

Autre figure attendue : Leigh Frost, Leader of the Cornwall Council, qui interviendra dans une conversation consacrée à la diaspora et au rôle des Cornouailles comme nation invitée d’honneur du Festival Interceltique de Lorient 2026. Sa présence rappelle à quel point le forum ne se limite pas aux seuls enjeux business au sens classique du terme. Ici, développement économique, diplomatie territoriale, réseaux diasporiques et affirmation culturelle avancent ensemble.

L’autre grand fil rouge de la journée sera sans conteste l’intelligence artificielle. Plusieurs interventions y seront consacrées, avec des angles très concrets : adoption de l’IA dans un monde multilingue, usage de l’IA dans le support client à grande échelle, ou encore préservation de la langue mannoise grâce aux nouvelles technologies. Dans ce contexte, la présence de Declan Ivory, VP Customer Support chez Intercom, attire particulièrement l’attention. Elle apporte une dimension très opérationnelle et très actuelle à la programmation. Intercom, devenu l’un des grands noms de la tech irlandaise, incarne cette nouvelle génération d’entreprises capables de faire de l’IA un moteur de croissance à grande échelle, avec plus de 400 millions de dollars de revenus récurrents. Cela donne à cette intervention un relief particulier : on ne parle plus d’IA comme d’une promesse abstraite, mais comme d’un levier économique bien réel.

Quelques thèmes forts de la journée

Le programme de cette édition sur l’île de Man reflète une ambition claire : faire dialoguer les grands sujets de transformation économique avec les spécificités des territoires celtiques. L’innovation y occupe une place centrale, qu’il s’agisse de l’Isle of Man Innovation Challenge, des liens entre universités et entreprises, ou de l’essor de l’IA dans des contextes multilingues et culturels.

Mais la journée ne s’arrête pas à la technologie. Elle abordera aussi le tourisme avec impact, la transition des entreprises vers des modèles plus responsables, la valeur de la nature, le maritime, l’ingénierie et l’industrie manufacturière. Cette diversité thématique montre bien ce qui fait la singularité du forum : il ne s’agit pas seulement d’observer les tendances, mais de réfléchir à la manière dont les nations et régions celtiques peuvent y prendre part, chacune avec ses forces propres.

La question de la diaspora sera également très présente, que ce soit à travers les Cornouailles, l’Irlande ou les réseaux économiques écossais. Là encore, l’Interceltic Business Forum défend une idée forte : les diasporas ne sont pas seulement des héritages affectifs ou culturels, elles constituent aussi des réseaux d’influence, de circulation et d’opportunités économiques.

Enfin, la langue et la culture garderont toute leur place dans la programmation, notamment autour de la langue mannoise. Ce point est essentiel. L’Interceltic Business Forum repose depuis ses débuts sur la conviction que l’économie ne peut pas être dissociée des récits, des langues et des identités qui structurent les territoires. C’est précisément cette articulation entre enracinement et projection internationale qui fait sa force.

Qu’est-ce que l’Interceltic Business Forum, et pourquoi l’île de Man ?

L’Interceltic Business Forum est un espace de rencontre dédié aux échanges économiques entre les nations et régions celtiques. Son objectif est de favoriser les coopérations, de faire émerger des synergies entre écosystèmes territoriaux, et de montrer que les espaces celtiques peuvent proposer des modèles originaux dans des secteurs aussi variés que l’innovation, le tourisme, la finance, la culture ou l’investissement.

Le choix de l’île de Man s’inscrit parfaitement dans cette logique. L’île présente plusieurs caractéristiques qui résonnent avec l’esprit du forum : une identité celtique affirmée, une taille qui favorise l’agilité, une capacité à tester de nouveaux modèles et une vraie volonté d’attirer entreprises, talents et investisseurs. En accueillant pour la première fois l’Interceltic Business Forum, elle affirme sa place au sein des dynamiques économiques interceltique contemporaines.

Ce choix a aussi une portée symbolique. Il rappelle que le monde celtique ne se résume pas à une mémoire ou à un imaginaire partagé, mais qu’il peut aussi constituer un espace vivant de collaboration économique. Sur ce point, l’île de Man apparaît comme un hôte particulièrement pertinent : un territoire où l’identité n’est pas un frein à l’ouverture, mais au contraire un socle sur lequel construire.
