LAFAYETTE, La. — May 9th — Lafayette’s music, food, tourism and unique culture will take center stage this summer in Brittany, France, with a new Lafayette tourism tent planned for the upcoming Festival Interceltique de Lorient, one of France’s largest urban festivals, attracting an estimated 800,000 to 1 million visitors each year.

The Lafayette presence, facilitated by Breizh Amerika, will be announced locally during Fête de la Bretagne Louisiane on Saturday, May 9, at Wild Child Wines in Lafayette. The event will celebrate the next chapter of the Louisiana–Brittany relationship with Breton gastronomy tastings, global wine culture and live music from Louis Michot, who is also scheduled to perform at Festival Interceltique de Lorient this summer.

The announcement comes as Louisiana musician Louis Michot prepares to perform at the 2026 Festival Interceltique de Lorient with Louis Michot & SWAMP MAGIC. Michot, a two-time Grammy Award winner and a leading voice in Louisiana French music, is scheduled for festival appearances from August 3–6, 2026, following his October 2025 collaboration in Lafayette with Breton musicians brought by Breizh Amerika.

That October collaboration, held during Festival Acadiens et Créoles programming, brought Breton artists Tanguy Soubigou and Simon Créachcadec together with Louisiana musicians including Louis Michot, Jourdan Thibodeaux, Trey Boudreaux and Kevin Naquin. The collaboration continued a musical dialogue between Brittany and Louisiana rooted in shared traditions, regional languages and living cultural memory.

The May 9 Fête de la Bretagne Louisiane event at Wild Child Wines will celebrate this next chapter with a Breton gastronomy theme. Guests will be invited to taste and discover products from Brittany and Louisiana, including Bordier butter, Payson butter, Bret’s chips, Groix & Nature specialties and Kouign Marie products. The event will also feature music from Louis Michot, connecting Lafayette audiences directly to the artist who will carry Louisiana’s sound to Brittany this summer.

Wild Child Wines, known for its international wine selection and globally inspired food culture, offers a natural setting for the event’s focus on gastronomy, travel and transatlantic cultural exchange.

A Decade of Brittany–Louisiana Exchange
Over the past decade, Breizh Amerika’s work in Lafayette and Louisiana has generated a clear cultural return on investment, including +20 documented Brittany–Louisiana initiatives and +50 musician and artist exchange participations.

L’île de Man accueille pour la première fois l’Interceltic Business Forum

L’Interceltic Business Forum s’apprête à écrire une nouvelle page de son histoire sur l’île de Man, à l’occasion de sa neuvième édition et, surtout, pour la première fois dans ce territoire celtique.

Depuis sa création, le forum s’est imposé comme un rendez-vous à part, au croisement de l’entreprise, de l’innovation, des territoires et des cultures celtes. Plus qu’un simple événement économique, il défend une vision : celle d’un espace interceltique capable de faire dialoguer identité, coopération et ambition internationale.

L’édition 2026 a donc une portée particulière. En choisissant l’île de Man, le forum affirme sa volonté de continuer à élargir sa géographie tout en restant fidèle à son ADN. Cette première mannoise met en lumière un territoire qui conjugue héritage celtique, agilité institutionnelle et volonté de se positionner sur les secteurs d’avenir. Pour les participants venus de Bretagne, de Cornouailles, d’Irlande, d’Écosse, du pays de Galles et d’ailleurs, ce rendez-vous promet une journée de réflexion, de rencontres et de perspectives concrètes.

Des intervenants majeurs : les leaders de l’île de Man et des Cornouailles, et l’essor de l’IA

La force de cette neuvième édition tient d’abord à la qualité de son plateau. Dès l’ouverture, le ton sera donné avec la présence de Hon. Alf Cannan MHK, Chief Minister de l’île de Man, de Kirree Gooberman, CEO de Business Isle of Man, et de Charles Kergaravat, fondateur de l’Interceltic Business Forum. Cette séquence d’ouverture souligne l’importance politique et stratégique de l’événement pour le territoire hôte, qui entend clairement faire de cette première édition sur l’île de Man un moment fort de son calendrier économique.

Autre figure attendue : Leigh Frost, Leader of the Cornwall Council, qui interviendra dans une conversation consacrée à la diaspora et au rôle des Cornouailles comme nation invitée d’honneur du Festival Interceltique de Lorient 2026. Sa présence rappelle à quel point le forum ne se limite pas aux seuls enjeux business au sens classique du terme. L’autre grand fil rouge de la journée sera sans conteste l’intelligence artificielle. Plusieurs interventions y seront consacrées, avec des angles très concrets : adoption de l’IA dans un monde multilingue, usage de l’IA dans le support client à grande échelle, ou encore préservation de la langue mannoise grâce aux nouvelles technologies. Dans ce contexte, la présence de Declan Ivory, VP Customer Support chez Intercom, attire particulièrement l’attention. Elle apporte une dimension très opérationnelle et très actuelle à la programmation. Intercom, devenu l’un des grands noms de la tech irlandaise, incarne cette nouvelle génération d’entreprises capables de faire de l’IA un moteur de croissance à grande échelle, avec plus de 400 millions de dollars de revenus récurrents. Cela donne à cette intervention un relief particulier : on ne parle plus d’IA comme d’une promesse abstraite, mais comme d’un levier économique bien réel.

Quelques thèmes forts de la journée

Le programme de cette édition sur l’île de Man reflète une ambition claire : faire dialoguer les grands sujets de transformation économique avec les spécificités des territoires celtiques. L’innovation y occupe une place centrale, qu’il s’agisse de l’Isle of Man Innovation Challenge, des liens entre universités et entreprises, ou de l’essor de l’IA dans des contextes multilingues et culturels.

Mais la journée ne s’arrête pas à la technologie. Elle abordera aussi le tourisme avec impact, la transition des entreprises vers des modèles plus responsables, la valeur de la nature, le maritime, l’ingénierie et l’industrie manufacturière. Cette diversité thématique montre bien ce qui fait la singularité du forum : il ne s’agit pas seulement d’observer les tendances, mais de réfléchir à la manière dont les nations et régions celtiques peuvent y prendre part, chacune avec ses forces propres.

La question de la diaspora sera également très présente, que ce soit à travers les Cornouailles, l’Irlande ou les réseaux économiques écossais. Là encore, l’Interceltic Business Forum défend une idée forte : les diasporas ne sont pas seulement des héritages affectifs ou culturels, elles constituent aussi des réseaux d’influence, de circulation et d’opportunités économiques.

Enfin, la langue et la culture garderont toute leur place dans la programmation, notamment autour de la langue mannoise. Ce point est essentiel. L’Interceltic Business Forum repose depuis ses débuts sur la conviction que l’économie ne peut pas être dissociée des récits, des langues et des identités qui structurent les territoires. C’est précisément cette articulation entre enracinement et projection internationale qui fait sa force.

Qu’est-ce que l’Interceltic Business Forum, et pourquoi l’île de Man ?

L’Interceltic Business Forum est un espace de rencontre dédié aux échanges économiques entre les nations et régions celtiques. Son objectif est de favoriser les coopérations, de faire émerger des synergies entre écosystèmes territoriaux, et de montrer que les espaces celtiques peuvent proposer des modèles originaux dans des secteurs aussi variés que l’innovation, le tourisme, la finance, la culture ou l’investissement.

Le choix de l’île de Man s’inscrit parfaitement dans cette logique. L’île présente plusieurs caractéristiques qui résonnent avec l’esprit du forum : une identité celtique affirmée, une taille qui favorise l’agilité, une capacité à tester de nouveaux modèles et une vraie volonté d’attirer entreprises, talents et investisseurs. En accueillant pour la première fois l’Interceltic Business Forum, elle affirme sa place au sein des dynamiques économiques interceltique contemporaines.

Ce choix a aussi une portée symbolique. Il rappelle que le monde celtique ne se résume pas à une mémoire ou à un imaginaire partagé, mais qu’il peut aussi constituer un espace vivant de collaboration économique. Sur ce point, l’île de Man apparaît comme un hôte particulièrement pertinent : un territoire où l’identité n’est pas un frein à l’ouverture, mais au contraire un socle sur lequel construire.

A crêpe is not usually the first object that comes to mind in a physics lab. In Brittany, it belongs more naturally to the family table, the local crêperie or the summer festival than to the world of equations and mechanical models.

And yet that is exactly where it has now appeared.

In a recent study led by researcher Tom Marzin, the crêpe becomes a serious subject of scientific inquiry. The paper, titled The Physics of Crêpes: Elasto-gravity control of soft folding, asks a simple question: what happens when a soft, thin object folds under its own weight?

The answer is more interesting than it may first appear. By studying folded crêpes alongside other flexible materials, the researchers show that this familiar Breton staple can help explain how soft sheets bend, hold their shape, store energy and unfold. It is a reminder that science often begins with ordinary objects, observed closely.

The crêpe is one of Brittany’s most recognisable cultural symbols. To see it enter the language of modern physics is both amusing and meaningful.

A Breton Classic, Observed Differently

The starting point of the research is simple: fold a crêpe and watch what happens.
Unlike a sheet of paper, a crêpe does not form a hard crease. It bends softly. It curves. It settles into place under the combined effect of its own flexibility and its weight. In scientific terms, this is what the researchers call soft folding.

That distinction matters. A great deal of folding science has focused on rigid materials or folds created by sharp creases. But many materials in everyday life do not behave that way. Fabrics, thin films, membranes and food items like crêpes belong to another category altogether. They fold without hinges. Their shape emerges from a balance of forces rather than from a fixed line.

That is what makes the crêpe so useful as a model. It is round, thin, soft and immediately legible. Anyone can see the phenomenon. The fold is not abstract. It happens on a plate.
There is also something fitting in the fact that a Breton food should become the basis of this kind of experiment. Brittany has long been associated with forms of knowledge that are practical, embodied and handed down through gesture as much as through theory. Cooking is one of them. The making of crêpes involves texture, timing, temperature and technique. It is not physics in the academic sense, but it is certainly an intimate understanding of matter.

The study suggests that a crêpe cannot be folded indefinitely: in practice, the limit is only a few stable folds, with around four folds serving as a useful rule of thumb for a crêpe-sized circular sheet.

What the Study Shows

At the centre of the paper is the idea that a soft fold is governed by a balance between two forces: elasticity, which resists bending, and gravity, which pulls the sheet downward. From that balance, the researchers define what is known as an elasto-gravity length, a characteristic scale that helps predict how the fold behaves.

Once that scale is identified, it becomes possible to predict several features of the folded object: its shape, its height, its stability and its tendency to open again. A folded crêpe may look informal or irregular, but its behaviour is not random. It follows a mechanical logic.

The researchers compare crêpes with other soft materials, including thin synthetic sheets, and find that the same basic principles apply across all of them. That is what gives the work its broader significance. The crêpe is not just an amusing example. It is part of a larger family of soft, flexible systems.

The paper also looks at what makes a fold stable. Some folded shapes remain in place. Others do not. At a certain point, the geometry no longer supports the configuration and the object unfolds. The study shows that this threshold can be understood and predicted.
It also answers a question many readers will immediately ask: how many times can you fold a crêpe? Not indefinitely. For circular sheets like crêpes, the number of possible stable folds is limited by geometry, and in practice the paper points to only a few successive folds. As a reader-friendly rule of thumb, around four folds is a fair summary for a crêpe-sized circular sheet, though the exact limit depends on size and flexibility rather than one fixed universal number.

The study goes further still. It examines the volume enclosed by folds and the speed at which a folded object unfolds once stability is lost. In both cases, the behaviour follows identifiable physical laws. The fold is not just a shape. It is a dynamic state, governed by stored energy and release.

Why It Matters Beyond the Crêpe

The obvious pleasure of this research lies in its subject. But the point of the work reaches well beyond Breton gastronomy.

Soft folding matters in many areas of science and engineering. Flexible materials are now used in packaging, soft robotics, membranes, medical devices and deployable structures. In all of these cases, the same questions arise. How can a thin sheet be folded compactly without damage? How stable will it be? When released, how will it deploy? The researchers present their results as a way to think more clearly about compact storage and gravity-assisted deployment in soft materials.

That is why the crêpe matters here. Not because it is quaint, but because it makes the physics visible. It turns an abstract problem into something immediate. The folded crêpe becomes a bridge between the domestic and the scientific.

That bridge is also cultural. Breton identity is often represented through food, but not always in ways that feel substantial. Too often, regional cuisine is reduced to image or cliché. What this study offers instead is another way of looking at a cultural object. The crêpe remains rooted in tradition, but it is also revealed as a structure with material intelligence.

That is a useful reminder. Culture is not separate from knowledge. It often contains it.

Nous sommes ravis de partager que l’artiste louisianais Louis Michot se produira en Bretagne cet été dans le cadre du Festival Interceltique de Lorient. Voix essentielle de la scène musicale louisianaise, Louis Michot s’attache à faire vivre la langue et les traditions culturelles de Louisiane, qu’il a déjà mises à l’honneur à travers plusieurs collaborations avec Breizh Amerika.

Double lauréat des Grammy Awards, il incarne une création artistique à la fois profondément enracinée et résolument ouverte sur le monde.

À l’occasion de cette belle annonce, il revient avec nous sur son parcours, les liens musicaux entre la Louisiane et la Bretagne, et ce que représente pour lui cette invitation à se produire en Bretagne cet été.

Parlez-nous de vous et de votre groupe?

Je suis surtout connu comme chanteur et violinist pour les Lost Bayou Ramblers, un groupe de musique “Cadjien” de Louisiane et le gagant du deux prix Grammy, et en même temps je donne des performances solo, et avec mon group SWAMP MAGIC, compri de Bryan Webre et Jonny Campos de Lost Bayou Ramblers, et Evan Ceaser de la Nouvelle Orléans sur les tambours. Depuis à l’age de 15 ans, je joue avec Les Frères Michot avec mon père et mes oncles, et ma passion pour le Français Louisianais, le folklore régional, et la renouvelabilité sur le paye qui se disparaît le plus vite du monde, ce à l'essence de ma carrière de musique.

Rêve du Troubadour, mon premier album solo, a été lancé en Septembre 2023, et le groupe SWAMP MAGIC à était former de jouer ces pieces sur scene. Je suis accompagné par invités spéciaux sur ces enregistrements incluent guitariste Touareg de Niger, Bombino, et aussi la chanteuse et celliste connue pour sa représentation d'Haïti, Leyla McCalla, et saxophonist avant-garde Dickie Landry, entre autres. Connu d’habitude comme violinist, je joue premièrement de la guitare sur l’album solo, et aussi l'accordéon, bass, et programmations des beats.

Les performances de Louis Michot et SWAMP MAGIC présentent des selections dynamique original et des bijoux anciens réimaginer sur les instruments traditionels et moderns. Les chansons de SWAMP MAGIC varie des danses Zydeco au balades de l’ambiance pensif et au nouvelles melodies originales.

Existe-t-il des liens musicaux entre la Louisiane et la Bretagne ?

Les liens entre la musiques de Louisiane et la Bretagne me resemble tres fort, mais peut explorer. Le debut de cet connection, pour moi, c’est à l’entour de la chanson “Le Jument de Michot”, que mon oncle Bobby Michot à ramener ici en Louisiana apres avoir apris en Bretagne plus que trents ans passé. Depuis qu’on aà commencer de jouer cette chanson avec Les Frères Michot, et asteur avec SWAMP MAGIC, on à trouver un lien tres fort avec les musiciens de Bretagne, et en plus ça partage le nom de ma famille, et on avait plein des Juments qui ont “manger tout le foin” avant l’hiver est arriver, comme ell edit la chanson!

Cet voyage à Lorient serait mon troisième opportunité de collaborer avec des musiciens Breton, comme en 2025 j’ai jouer avec deux musiciens Breton amener en Louisiane par Breizh Amerika, et aussi en 2014 je faisais partie d’un jumelage avec les musiciens de Lafayette et de Redon de Arnaudville, ici ou je reste en Louisiane. On à partager des chansons Cajun et Breton entre un et l’autre, et on aussi trouver plusieurs chansons en commun, et les melodies et rhythms tres similaire, et je suis bien intrigué de suivre ce connection plus profondement au Festival Interceltique.

Vous avez participé a une Breizh Amerika Collab en octobre dernier ; pouvez-vous nous en parler ?

Le collaboration mit ensemble pas Breizh Amerika l’année passer pendant le Festival Acadiens et Créole et magnifique. Charles Kergaravat nous à mit en contact avec Simon Creachcadec et Tanguy Soubigou avant de leur arrive en Louisiane, et on a trouver quelques morceau de musique de chaque bord pour apprends, et la première fois qu’on a jouer ensemble c’etait live avant le publique!

Ces deux musiciens ont monter sur le scene avec Lost Bayou Ramblers au Blue Moon Saloon à Lafayette le Samedi soir, et on a jouer une chanson Breton, et la foule l’adorer, et nous-autres aussi, et puis ils ont jouer sur un tune Cajun, et on a fini avec La Jument de Michot et le monde n’ont pas arrêter de danser.

Vous vous produirez au Festival Interceltique 2026. Qu'est-ce que cela représente pour vous ?

Notre debut au Festival Interceltique c’est tres important pour nous, pas seulement de continuer à suivre le lien entre les musiques Breton et Cadjien, mais aussi de faire parti d’un connection des sous-cultures qui tiens fort à prosperer contre les pressures sociaux et politiques.

En Louisiane, on est tres petite en quantité comparer aux Americains à l’entour, et le transmission de notre langue et la connaissance des traditions c’est pas evident à continuer, mais c’est tres importants que ça reste vibrant, voulu, et soutenu. On à beaucoup d’apprends par rapport a à l’experience Breton.

Cette semaine à Lorient, dans le cadre des Deizioù, Emglev Bro an Oriant et l’UPB ont accueilli une conférence de Charles Kergaravat (association Breizh Amerika) consacrée à l’émigration bretonne vers les États-Unis, devant un public nombreux. In this Breizh Amerika Profiles, we meet Theodore “Ted” Brode—known to many as Théo—a Louisiana-based French educator and musician whose journey has carried him from pipe band circles and Cajun sessions to festoù-noz in Brittany.

He shares how family roots, a year in Rennes, and a Bagad encounter in Lafayette helped spark a deep dive into Breton music—right down to picking up the bombarde and finding new ways to connect Breizh and Louisiana.

Tell us where you are from and your interest in Brittany?

My name is Ted. I grew up in the woods of northeast Louisiana. I’ve lived in the Lafayette area for a while now. Most people know me in local circles for my work in French and French language education. That is a story in and of itself. In short, I’ve been pretty deep into anything in Louisiana connected to French/ A lot of my francophone friends know me as “Théo.”

At the same time, I suppose I’ve also had my feet wet in all types of musical and language related things throughout my life. My exposure to Breton culture was mostly passive growing up. My parents were fans of traditional music and I was exposed to a few Breton melodies from different Celtic groups such as the Chieftains versions of Son ar chistr and Pe trouz war an douar. (I didn’t know the titles at the time but knew the melodies well) We also attended different festivals where I listened to a lot of Celtic music. Most Celtic bands have some sort of Breton set. I saw a Highland Pipe Band play at a festival and became instantly hooked as a young boy. I started taking lessons around the age of 8 and joined a local pipe band. With the pipe band, I played in various competitions and festivals in the deep south for many years.

Throughout my teens, I added a couple popular Bagad tunes to my repertoire such as “An Dro Saint Patrick” and “La Boum” which were well known in the piping circles outside of Brittany. The Great Highland Bagpipe (GHB) has of course been a vital part of the Breton “Bagad” and “Bagadou” since WW2. Naturally, the two piping traditions have bled into each other's repertoires. In addition, I took up playing the Irish whistle and low whistle in high school while listening to a good bit of Breton melodies from different Celtic groups such as Tri Yann and Lunasa. In college, I joined a Celtic folk band playing pipes and whistles. I also played Funerals, Weddings, Burn’s Suppers and St. Patrick’s Day gigs at the local Irish Pub.

At the same time, I developed a taste for Cajun music at a pretty young age. I’m not sure why but the French language paired with the fiddle and accordion was something special. In high school, I self taught fiddle and even French. I never took any formal French classes until college. I’m not from an area that has historical ties to Cajun music and isn’t a part of Acadiana. I would say that I was probably exposed to more celtic related things if anything considering the areas Scots and Irish connections. However, a lot of interest in French came not just from that genre of music but also an interest in my family history. Some of those ancestors are also from Brittany: the Voisin family from Saint-Servan, the Leblanc family from St. Malo, the Delachaise family from Nantes, as well as Acadian ancestors who were living in western Brittany during the diaspora.

After college, I spent a year teaching in Rennes as a part of the CODOFIL program called Escadrille Louisiane. I went with the intent of learning more French and to become a French Immersion teacher. In my head, my experience with Breton music and learning French were not really connected. (I guess that makes me Breton?) I was in Rennes for French and work but the longer I stayed I realized I had more connections with the area by participating in Fest Noz’s, local festivals such as Bogue d’Or in Redon and traveling throughout Breizh. I learned a lot about the different Breton and Gallo regions.

In 2019, Bagad Plougastell came to play at Festival Internationale in Lafayette. At the time, I was deep into Cajun Music and French. I hadn’t really touched my other celtic instruments in several years. Seeing the Bagad in person was definitely motivating. That year I decided to pick the pipes back up and in 2020, when musical competitions became popular online due to Covid, I competed in many events and won a couple 6/8 March competitions using a march composed by Herri Leon (from Finistere) named “Deut mat oc'h Yann.” One thing led to another, and I found myself with a bombarde.

Why pick up the bombarde?

I chose to learn the bombarde out of curiosity but also to dig a little deeper into music and Breton music. One thing that I’ve enjoyed in the process was moving my mindset outside of sheet music to listening. I really liked how a lot of bombarde repertoire comes from an oral tradition and from a rich tradition in the Breton language. This is kind of foreign to most Highland pipers as they’ve relied heavily on manuals and books. Although, it does have its own ancient singing tradition (See: canntaireachd)

I’m not anti-sheet music by any means but that foundation in singing is fundamental. I’ve enjoyed getting into Bagad compositions and arrangements. Although pipers in Bagads and Pipe Bands play essentially the same instrument, they use a different musical scale which is something I have had to wrap my mind around. This is in part due to the bombarde. The bombarde adds so much more to the performance and reaches well beyond the limited scales of the pipes.

I’m really starting to step out of my Bagad / Pipe Band comfort zone to see how the bombarde fits in with other traditions and scenes such as its role in the Mass or being played with the Biniou kozh.

Was it hard to pick up?

The fingering of a bombard has not been difficult to learn because it really mimics the same fingerings of other instruments such as the tin whistle which I already play. However, the bombard is known as a physically demanding instrument. A bagpipe itself is a good exercise on the lungs but you have the luxury of a bag to supplement your breathing. Luckily, the style of Breton bombard music follows a call and response type of structure in which the bombard initiates the rhythm and the feel of the music and allows other instruments such as the binoiou kozh or binoiu braz to fill in the gaps leaving a little breathing room (literally).

There are other challenging things that the bombard presents such as hitting extra octaves, tonguing the reed, and adding a type of rhythm that a bagpipe cannot attain. The most challenging thing is just playing and learning the music by myself away from other talabarders. I’ve corresponded with other bombard players but hearing music through a computer is not quite the same as hearing a bombard in person.

You’ve taken part in Breizh Amerika before, what have you enjoyed?

I’ve listened to several stellar performances from Breton players who’ve travelled to the area in the past few years. The most recent was the most memorable. After the most recent Festival Acadiens et Creoles, I witnessed Simon Creachcadec and Tanguy Soubigou really put on a show at a small house jam outside of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Most Breton musicians I’ve seen are multitalented and these two guys really set the bar high. It was a mixture of improv Breton and Louisiana music. It was definitely a night to remember.

Le tilde du prénom Fañch en justice

Il y a quelques semaines, Amélie Caro, maire de Pleyben (Finistère), et son conjoint ont été convoqués devant le tribunal judiciaire de Brest afin de défendre le prénom de leur fils, Fañch, âgé de 14 mois.

La procédure porte sur l’usage du tilde (ñ), signe diacritique propre à la langue bretonne, dans l’état civil français.

Pourquoi « Fañch » ?

Selon elle, le choix du prénom est d’abord familial : Fañch était le prénom breton de l’arrière-grand-père de l’enfant (François), décédé un an plus tôt, et couramment appelé ainsi par ses proches.

La lettre ñ qui compose ce prénom n’est ni une invention récente ni une provocation : cette graphie existe depuis le Moyen Âge et apparaît dans des textes anciens comme l’ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts, l’un des textes qui ont structuré l’histoire linguistique du pays. L’usage de ce signe s’inscrit pleinement dans les traditions linguistiques régionales.

Une affaire qui s’inscrit dans un contentieux plus large

L’affaire de Pleyben n’est pas isolée. Depuis plusieurs années, d’autres familles ont été confrontées à des contestations similaires concernant l’usage de signes diacritiques propres aux langues régionales — en particulier le tilde dans les prénoms bretons — lors de déclarations à l’état civil. Plusieurs de ces dossiers ont donné lieu à des procédures judiciaires, parfois longues, aboutissant à des décisions variables selon les juridictions et les périodes.

Cette nouvelle audience intervient dans un contexte où l’État français utilise par ailleurs officiellement certains de ces signes dans l’espace public, notamment sur des panneaux bilingues ou dans des communications institutionnelles en langues régionales. Cette coexistence de pratiques administratives et de contentieux judiciaires continue d’alimenter le débat.

13 septembre 2017 (Quimper) : le tribunal de grande instance ordonne la suppression du tilde pour un enfant prénommé Fañch.
26 janvier 2018 (Rennes) : la justice autorise l’apostrophe dans le prénom breton Derc’hen (autre contentieux lié aux signes non listés dans la circulaire de 2014).
19 novembre 2018 (Rennes) : la cour d’appel de Rennes valide l’usage du tilde dans « Fañch ».
22 novembre 2018 : le parquet général annonce un pourvoi en cassation contre cette décision.
17 octobre 2019 : la Cour de cassation juge le pourvoi irrecevable, ce qui met fin à ce volet de la procédure.
24 février 2025 (Lorient) : le tribunal de Lorient autorise le tilde dans « Fañch » dans une autre affaire.
28 février 2025 (Angers) : la cour d’appel d’Angers juge irrecevable une procédure visant à supprimer le tilde dans un dossier similaire.
3 novembre 2025 (Rennes) : la cour d’appel de Rennes confirme une décision favorable au tilde dans le dossier d’un enfant né à Lorient.

La suite de l’affaire

Dans l’attente de la décision, Amélie Caro rappelle que l’enjeu dépasse, selon elle, le cas de sa famille : « Défendre ce prénom, ce n’est pas demander un privilège. C’est défendre une langue, une histoire et le droit de transmettre. »

Le tribunal judiciaire de Brest doit rendre sa décision dans environ deux mois. Cette nouvelle étape est suivie de près, alors que plusieurs affaires similaires ont déjà donné lieu à des procédures et à des décisions parfois divergentes selon les juridictions.

L’émigration bretonne aux Etats-Unis du XXème siècle à aujourd’hui par Charles Kergaravat

Tout au long du XXᵉ siècle, des milliers de Bretons ont quitté leur terre pour les États-Unis. Ces départs, motivés par des difficultés économiques, les bouleversements sociaux, les guerres ou la recherche de nouvelles opportunités, se sont souvent organisés par réseaux familiaux et communautaires. Ils ont profondément marqué la Bretagne, tout en contribuant à façonner des communautés bretonnes durables outre-Atlantique.

Loin de rompre les liens avec leur région d’origine, ces migrants ont maintenu des attaches culturelles, linguistiques et affectives fortes avec la Bretagne. Cette relation singulière a donné naissance à une diaspora active, dont l’histoire permet aujourd’hui de mieux comprendre les phénomènes contemporains de mobilité, d’expatriation et d’appartenance.

Replacer cette émigration dans le temps long invite également à porter un regard différent sur les débats actuels autour de l’immigration aux États-Unis. Les parcours des migrants bretons d’hier résonnent avec les enjeux contemporains liés aux politiques migratoires et aux dispositifs de contrôle, notamment ceux incarnés aujourd’hui par ICE.

Une mise en perspective historique essentielle pour comprendre comment les sociétés accueillent, intègrent — ou rejettent — celles et ceux qui se déplacent.

Breizh Amerika et le conférencier

La conférence sera animée par Charles Kergaravat, fondateur et président de Breizh Amerika. Son engagement s’enracine dans une histoire familiale profondément marquée par l’émigration : plusieurs membres de sa famille, originaires de Bretagne centrale, ont pris part aux vagues de départ vers les États-Unis au XXᵉ siècle. Cette mémoire familiale constitue le socle d’un parcours personnel et associatif tourné vers la transmission et le dialogue entre les cultures.

Né et grandi à Queens, à New York City — l’un des territoires les plus divers linguistiquement et culturellement au monde — Charles Kergaravat a été très tôt confronté à la pluralité des langues, des identités et des trajectoires migratoires. Cet environnement cosmopolite a profondément façonné son regard sur le monde et nourri son intérêt pour les questions d’appartenance, de circulation et de coexistence culturelle.

Il est également le fondateur de BZH NY, créée pour fédérer la communauté bretonne de New York. Dans cette même logique de mise en réseau et de coopération, il a fondé et structuré l’Interceltic Business Forum, une initiative internationale visant à créer des passerelles économiques et professionnelles entre les territoires celtiques et leurs diasporas.

Depuis de nombreuses années, Charles Kergaravat s’investit bénévolement dans la construction de ponts durables entre communautés, mêlant culture, économie et initiatives citoyennes, afin de favoriser la compréhension mutuelle et les coopérations transatlantiques. Parallèlement à cet engagement, il a mené une carrière dans le monde de l’entreprise et du marketing, souvent dans des contextes internationaux. Cette double expérience nourrit une approche transversale des relations entre territoires, diasporas et mondes culturels.

Son parcours relie ainsi mémoire familiale, expérience vécue de la diversité, engagement citoyen et action économique, au service d’une vision ouverte et contemporaine des liens entre la Bretagne, les États-Unis et leurs diasporas.

As this year comes to an end, we’re proud to reflect on a year filled with encounters, collaborations, and celebrations that continued to connect Brittany and America across the Atlantic.

À l’approche de la fin de l’année, nous sommes fiers de revenir sur une année riche en rencontres, en collaborations et en célébrations, qui ont continué de faire vivre les liens entre la Bretagne et l’Amérique.

Voici quelques moments qui ont marqué cette année :

La Breizh Amerika IPA remporte une médaille d’argent au Concours Général Agricole, lors du Salon International de l’Agriculture à Paris.
Interceltic Business Forum 2025, organisé à Falmouth, en Cornouailles.
« Breizh in the USA », un film retraçant un road trip musical lié à l’aventure Breizh Amerika à travers les États-Unis.
Soirée des 10 ans à Lorient, à la Tavarn Roi Morvan : dégustation en avant-première d’une nouvelle bière et concert.
Lancement de la nouvelle bière Breizh Amerika Session IPA, créée spécialement pour l’année anniversaire.
« 10 jours pour 10 ans » au Festival Interceltique de Lorient, avec une programmation mêlant concerts, film, exposition, conférence et temps de rencontre.
Interceltic Business Forum 2025 à Lorient, avec le bilan de l’événement et la mise en lumière des projets du Interceltic Startup Challenge, dont le lauréat.
Les célébrations des 10 ans se poursuivent en Louisiane, avec un stand breton au Festival Acadien et Créole à Lafayette, ainsi que des événements à La Nouvelle-Orléans.
