In 2015, Hermione, the “Frigate of Liberty,” in which Lafayette sailed to America in 1780, will sail again.
BREIZH AMERIKA is very proud to be a partner of Hermione's historic voyage to the United States this summer.
The idea of reconstructing an authentic, historical replica of the Hermione, made by hand in the techniques of the 18th century,
was conceived in 1993 by author and savant Erik Orsenna and Benedict Donnelly. Lafayette’s role in securing French money, men
and arms is often a forgotten piece of our collective memory, but seemed an invaluable part of history to be lost. The project defied
all odds, but the task is complete. Hermione, a masterful replica of the 1780 original, is making the 3,819 mile transatlantic voyage
back to the US this summer and docking in 12 iconic ports of call along the eastern seaboard. As a floating museum, access on
board will be free to the public.
The Friends of Hermione Lafayette in America is busy planning a full program of educational initiatives and cultural activities and events for visitors who will travel here from all over the world to see her next summer. The impressive and memorable lineup includes music, theater, and museum exhibitions of the times; there is also a traveling pier side Heritage Village that will dock in select ports.
Hermione Voyage 2015 is a celebration of Lafayette’s passionate commitment to and Hermione’s role in realizing our common cause of liberty and independence. Share the experience with family and friends. Make plans to see The Hermione!
