The Familiarity of Death in Brittany"Rien n’est plus particulier à la Bretagne que la préoccupation et la familiarité de la mort," ("Nothing is more distinctive to Brittany than the preoccupation and familiarity with death") wrote Gwenc’hlan Le Scouëzec in his Guide to Mysterious Brittany. Countless legends are associated with death, many of which were compiled by Anatole Le Braz in "La Légende de la Mort en Basse-Bretagne," published in 1893. Ronan Le Coadic, professor at l'Université Rennes 2, emphasizes how much has changed in the way the Bretons are born, live, and die over the course of the last century. The figure of Ankou, the presence of ossuaries, the significance of All Saints' Day in the Breton religious calendar, and the existence of region-specific rituals like the "proëlla" in Ouessant, all serve as testament to the enduring importance of the traditional cult of the dead in Breton culture, especially in Lower Brittany. Welsh heritage was traced to 1.98 million people in the United States. And when it comes to US presidents, half of them (23), including incumbent President Joe Biden, have Irish ancestors. Breizh Amerika met with American academic, Kevin Scannell from the Saint Louis University in Missouri to learn about his work and insights. (view video) Prof Kevin Scannell works with linguists from around the world to help build an online presence of their native language. His work with Gmail, Twitter and WhatsApp helps provide Irish localisations for software products and he has developed an Irish spell checker, grammar checker and thesaurus, as well as dictionaries and translation engines that support Irish, Scottish and Manx Gaelic. He has also initiated a project called Indigenous Tweets that encourages users to use their native language on social media every day. It tracks more than 150 different languages on Twitter—the number of users, the number of tweets, the top tweeter and the first tweeter. Prof Scannell's newest endeavor is to help develop an Irish-language Siri or Alexa style virtual assistant. He has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship by the US government and will spend the first half of 2020 in the Connemara Gaeltacht to work with researchers from NUI Galway’s Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge to research and develop computer resources. |
